Am 1. Mai Grundsteinlegung Beginn des Nationalen Aufbauwerks in Magdeburg
Der Architekturbeirat der Regierung der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik hat den für den Bau des Zentralen Platzes und der Ost-West-Strasse in Magdeburg vorgelegten Plänen grundsätzlich zugestimmt und damit den Weg zum Beginn des Nationalen Aufbauwerkes in Magdeburg freigegeben. Der Rat der Stadt hat nun beschlossen, die Grundsteinlegung am 1. Mai vorzunehmen.- In diesen Tagen zeigt sich auf der zukünftigen Grossbaustelle bereits ein reges Leben. Die Vorbereitungen für den Beginn der Bauarbeiten sind in vollem Gange.
UBz: Neben dem ältesten Teil Magdeburgs entsteht der jüngste. Blick auf die südliche Hälfte des Zentralen Platzes, wo für die 300 Arbeiter der Baustelle ein Kulturraum, Waschräume und Verkaufsstellen der HO und des Konsums errichtet werden. Der steil in den Himmel ragende Ruinenrest in der linken unteren Ecke des Bildes ist ein Rest der frühesten Stadtbefestigung Magdeburgs und steht unter Denkmalschutz. Dieser Teil der Stadtbefestigung ist im 13. Jahrhundert in einen Wohnturm umgebaut worden.

Links im Hintergrund die zweitürmige Sebastianskirche, in der Mitte das Volksstimme-Hochhaus, rechts der zweistöckige Bau des Hauptbahnhofs.
