Nederlands: Repronegatief. Grote, moderne suikerfabrieken werden in de 19e en 20e eeuw op Java opgericht, nadat het suikerriet eeuwenlang in handmolens en buffelmolens en aan het begin van de 19e eeuw in een paar watermolens vermalen was. Omdat er vaak over 'suikerplantages' gesproken wordt, waarbij de nadruk valt op het agrarisch element van de onderneming, heeft het industriële element niet altijd de aandacht gekregen die het verdient. Tot 1930, toen door de Depressie en de daaropvolgende protectionistische maatregelen vele markten wegvielen, was de suikerindustrie van Java een van de grootste en meest geavanceerde spelers op de wereldmarkt voor suiker. Daarbij werd zowel in de fabrieken als in het veld de modernste technologie aangewend. Dit uitte zich soms ook in een triomfalistische architectuur. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Suikerfabriek Krebet, Malang
