The cover is in the public domain in the United States for the same reasons that apply to File:Jaws 1st edition 1975.jpg, which the US Copyright Office ruled is public domain. See File:Jaws illustration copyright decision.pdf.

There are no copyright notices on the cover nor the illustrations immediately behind the front and back covers. There is only one copyright notice inside the book: "COPYRIGHT © 1974 BY STEPHEN KING".

The book is not a composite/collective work such that Stephen King's copyright notice applies to the cover.

Furthermore, even if a copyright notice inside the book applies to the cover art, King is not the name of the proprietor of the cover nor a name by which the proprietor is generally known. King is neither an assignee of the cover nor a licensee such that his copyright notice shields the proprietor from forfeiture. Thus the cover art is published without a copyright notice and is hence in the public domain.
