Summary

Description
English: Chartley Moss Chartley Moss National Nature Reserve. The reserve is a schwingmoor, with between 300mm and 3m of peat overlying up to 13m of water. It was formed by post-glacial subsidence. The trees in the picture are dead because as they grow bigger and heavier they sink through the peat and eventually drown! Access to the site is limited to permit holders only for health and safety reasons.
