Item sets Chattanooga Times collection, 1870-1991 Title George Fort Milton, Sr. Date Created 1910 – 1920 Description Photograph of George Fort Milton, Sr., newspaper publisher and Democratic political activist. was born July 16, 1869 in Macon, Georgia, and died in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, April 23, 1924. In the 1890s he edited the Knoxville Sentinel and in 1909, he bought interest in the Chattanooga News. In 1912, he moved to Chattanooga to manage the News exclusively. He served as first lieutenant in the Sixth United States Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish American War in 1898. He supported women's suffrage, tax reform, and peace in Europe in 1915.
