Summary

Description
English: Clarendon House, Piccadilly, London (built circa 1667, demolished circa 1683), viewed from St James's Street. 1798 engraving by Nathaniel Smith and John Thomas Smith of London, copied from an earlier print in collection of Thomas Allen Esq. Published in Smith's "Antiquities of London" 1798. Below image is a section of an old map showing the position of Clarence House facing directly down St James's Street. Below which is the following text: "This view was copied from a rare print in the choice collection of Thomas Allen Esqr. to whom, for this and many other favors, the engraver of this work feels himself highly obliged. The above section shewing the relative situation of Clarendon House, was taken from a map of London (supposed to be unique) in the possession of John Charles Crowle Esqr. whose philanthropy is not exceeded by the splendor of the Illustrated Clarendon's History in which he has inserted it". In small print below: "See Clarendon p.512 and Pennant's London 3 Edit." Below that in small print: "Published August 10 1798 by N. Smith, Rembrandts Head, Gt Mays Buildings, St Martins Lane & J. T. Smith, 40 Frith Street, Soho".
Date 1798, copy of an earlier print in collection of Thomas Allen Esq.
