Summary

Description

Club chair on display as part of the "Jazz Age" exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.

Jean-Michel Frank (1895-1941) was a French interior designer known for his minimalism and use of sumptuous materials. He had no formal art training; devastated by the deaths of his two brothers and his parents within a short period, he drifted to Venice where he began to mingle with cosmopolitan society. He returned to Paris, and began designing interiors for the Paris Atelier (now the Parsons Paris School of Art and Design). He developed the now-famous Parsons table, and in 1924 designed a set of minimalist home furnishings for the French company Hermès. It was hugely influential, and continues to be mimicked worldwide. He opened his own firm in 1932. For the next seven years, he designed apartments and homes for the Rockefellers and Guerlains. He was named Artistic Director of the Argentinian firm COMTE in 1939.

This wood and leather club chair was designed by Frank in 1939. Its minimalist lines, wide arms, and heft are now widely imitated.
