Summary

Description
English: Cobden's Statue Standing statue of Cobden, MP for Stockport from 1841-47. It is listed Grade II and is in bronze on a granite plinth. It was sculpted by George G Adams of London and erected in 1886. Cobden was a political figure of national importance. He was in favour of free trade and a supporter of the Anti-Corn Law League which aimed to establish fair price for corn and therefore bread, during a period of great poverty. When the statue of Richard Cobden was temporarily removed in 2007, during the restoration of St Peter's Square, a time capsule was found under the plinth. It consisted of a copy of the Stockport Advertiser and the Cheshire County News, a poster announcing the unveiling of the statue by Cobden's daughter and two half pennies, dated 1886.
