Description “Raising the Wind; or, Both Sides of the Story” "Collins and Cunard Competition". 1852 cartoon by Frank Bellew depicting two boys sailing boats in a tub. Uncle Sam watches disinterestedly to the left while John Bull actively intervenes on the right. Commentary on US/UK competition and government subsidies in trans-Atlantic shipping, specifically between US shipping magnate Edward Knight Collins and UK shipping magnate Samuel Cunard. A third figure watches with interest, the personification of the newspaper "The Lantern" (representing search for knowledge).
