Summary

Description
English: German commanders, Spa, Belgium, during World War I. This is a fascinating photograph showing the war from the German perspective. It shows Kaiser Wilhelm II (1859-1941), Emperor of Germany between 1888 and 1918, flanked by two of his commanders, to the left Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg (1847-1934 ) and on the right General Erich von Ludendorff (1865-1937). They are discussing a map placed on a table in their headquarters' building in the Belgian town of Spa. Hindenburg and Ludendorff had been successful in the Eastern Front, before being transferred to the Western Front in 1916.

The image portrays the three men as calm and in control, the wise leaders of their troops. The fact that this photograph was in the possession of a German officer suggests that it may have been given out by the leadership as propaganda within the German army.
