Description
English: Illustration from Theophilus Francis Rodenbough's 1886 book, “Uncle Sam’s Medal of Honor" of Corp. Patrick H. Monaghan, 48th Pennsylvania Infantry. A native of County Mayo, Ireland, Monaghan fought for the Union Army during the American Civil War, and was awarded the U.S. Medal of Honor on December 1, 1864 for his gallantry at Petersburg, Virginia on June 17, 1864 when he recaptured the regimental flag of the 7th New York Heavy Artillery which had fallen into the hands of Confederate troops the day before.
