Summary

Description
English: Cumberland House Cumberland House is said to have been built by the 'butcher' Duke of Cumberland as a hunting box at the time when he kept his hounds at Dunstable Downs. During rebuilding one of the chimneys a brick was found with the date 1745. In 1890 the then owner, Mr R Cecil Peake, installed a generator, making it the first house in the village with electric lighting. A more recent owner was the Central Electricity Generating Board [later National Grid], who used it as an electricity supply control centre. The old car park is now used for housing, and the back part of the Cumberland House Garden has become the Village Garden.
