Description
English: David Scott Mitchell, from Mitchell family - pictorial collection, 1860-1901: Album of photographs of family and friends, ca. 1863-1892. Contains mainly studio portrait photographs from various photographers in Australia and the United Kingdom, 170 carte de visite photoprints - 28 x 23.5 x 6.4 cm. - with gilt edges and two brass clasps for closing mechanism. David Scott Mitchell (No. 166), State Library of New South Wales, PXC 831 / 166 David Scott Mitchell (1836-1907) was an avid collector of Australiana. In 1898 Mitchell agreed to bequeath his collection to the state of NSW provided that the government constructed a new Library building to house the collection. His gift is perhaps one of the greatest acts of benefaction ever seen in Australia. The Mitchell Library was officially opened on 8 March 1910, and opened to the public the next day, 9 March.
