Description Petersburg, Va., April 1865; Dead South Carolina soldier in trenches (Photo shows a soldier wearing a gunner's haversack, which confirms his identity as an artilleryman. The photographer placed a broken gun sponge in the scene as a prop, which indicates that the image was taken to the rear of the battery.
