Text Appearing Before Image:
90, William L. Baily, George S.Morris, J. Harris Reed, Samuel N. Rhoads and Spencer Trotter met atthe home of Mr. Baily and decided to organize; this was done and aconstitution adopted February 3, of that year. Incidentally Mr. Reedprovided cake for the preliminary meeting, but it is significant of thevirility of the movement to note that the refreshment feature neverafter appeared in the regular club meetings and even smoking wasprohibited for a few years. At the close of the February meeting theorganization had seven members: Witmer Stone and Charles Voelkerhaving meanwhile joined the movement. Baily was chosen presiiient andRhoads secretarv-treasurer. All the founders except Voelker and Stonewere members of the SocietN of Friends. Baily (architect) was a nephew and namesake of the author of one ofthe first books intendeil to popularize the stutK of (^ur Own Biriis of theUnited States. Morris (architect) had ornithologiial kinship with such * Rpi-il (irsi proposed orK^Ki/alion. (S7)

Bird Clubs in America 59 patrons of Audubon as Spencer and Harris. Reed (architect) hadbeen both associate and rival of Rhoads in birds-nesting escapades atboarding school in his early teens. Rhoads (farmer) was, at eight yearsstepson and scholar of Morriss aunt, to whose love of nature both owemore than to any other cause the bent of mind which was later shapedby intimate association with each other and with Prof. E. D. Cope, whothen lived in Haddonfield, N. J. Trotter (student) was cousin andassociate of N. T. Lawrence, an ornithological nephew of GeorgeN. Lawrence, and had just left a scholarship at the Academy ofNatural Sciences to study medicine. Stone (the naturalist) had recentlytaken a scholarship at the Academy and was then unknown to any of us save Trotter. His noble rage for bird lore in particular and for animaland vegetable lore in general seems to have been due to spontaneousgeneration. Voelker had emigrated to the States some years previouslyfrom Germany and was a taxid
