The Exchange building, erected in 1815 after designs by Benjamin H. Latrobe, was said to be the finest building in the United States devoted to commercial purposes. Here merchants and ship owners met daily at 1 o'clock for trading purposes. The dome was 115 feet high and the great hall beneath it - the "Exchange" proper - was adorned with marble columns supporting balconies to the east and west with an upper gallery high above. The south wing of the building was occupied as the Custom House.
