The title of this piece, Ecce Homo (Behold The Man), maybe seen on the scroll wrapping around Pontius Pilate, indicting he is speaking. The crowd respond "CRVCIFIGE. CRVCIFIGE. EVM."(Crucify Him). Jesus, on Pontius' left, is depicted being flogged on the way to his crucifixion.
The large hole in the middle of the painting was caused during the Peninsular War of 1812, when the cathedral was bombarded heavily. Restored in the 1950s, it was decided to leave the hole as a reminder of the panels history.
