English: Friargate Railway Bridge Built in 1878 by Andrew Handyside and Company, an iron founder in Derby, for the Derby Friargate Line of the Great Northern Railway, to span the elegant Georgian street of Friargate. The line was part of the Derbyshire and Staffordshire extension of the Great Northern Railway. It linked Nottingham and Grantham to Burton upon Trent. The route cut through the midlands industrial city of Derby, where an impressive warehouse was constructed, large sidings, and the pretty Derby Friargate Station immediately adjacent to the bridge. The line had such an impact on Derby, Friargate and the surrounding areas that it became known as the Derby Friargate Line. The largest structure built by Handyside is said to be the largest building in the UK covered by one span of iron and glass, the 1886 National Agricultural Hall in London, now known as Olympia. In 1893 Handyside provided the structures for the Manchester Ship Canal, including the Barton swing bridge.
