Summary

Description

Someries Castle, Hyde, Bedfordshire. All that remains of this site are the gatehouse (incorportaing a chapel and lodge) - the rest is earthworks and the whole site is a scheduled ancient monument (not a listed building). The name of it comes from William de Somery (of Dudley), whose residence stood here in the 13th century, but the building could not have been described as a "castle". It is one of the earliest brick buildings in England.

GOC Hertfordshire's walk on 14 April 2018. This was a 9.8-mile circular walk in and around the villages and hamlets of Breachwood Green, Colemans Green, Darleyhall and Wandon End in Hertfordshire; Someries and Chiltern Green in Bedfordshire; and Peter's Green, Perry Green and Bendish, back in Hertfordshire. I led the walk, which was attended by 13 people (including me).
