Summary

Description
English: Gotihawa near Kudan, the ancient site of Kapilbastu district. Gotihawa is identified as the holy place where Krakuchhanda Buddha was born, attained enlightenment and met his father after his enlightenment. Emperor Asoka visited the site in 249 BC, erected the Asoka Pillar and built a big stupa, possibly dedicating to the Krakuchhanda Buddha. The broken part of the Asoka Pillar stand 3.25 m high and has a diameter of 83/79c. The pillar is in-situ standing upon a masonry basement. The inscription bearing upper portion of the pillar broken off long ago remains missing till this day. The center of the present village there is an ancient well, which is still used by the villagers and in the south there lies an ancient water tank (pond).

Prominent early Chinese traeler Fa-hsien (339-413 AD) and Hsuan Tsang (636 AD) have descried, in their travel accounts, the existence of Gotihawa as the birthplace of Krakuchhanda Buddha and the erection of a stone pillar, bearing a lion capital, by Asoka (King).

Researcher Dr. L A Waddell cut a trench on the mound of the ruins and found the stupa that had a diameter of 22 m with a Pradakshinapatha (circumambulatory path) around it. The Nepalese and Italian joint excavation team had excavated this site in 1993 and yielded the remains of human activities from 10h to 9th century BC to 3rd or 4th century AD.
