  • Identified, left to right, back row: VFX61331 Sister (Sr) Gladys Laura Hughes (taken prisoner of war (POW) following the sinking of the Vyner Brooke and died of illness on 31 May 1945); SFX13419 Sr Annie Merle Trenerry (drowned following the sinking of the Vyner Brooke); SX13431 Sr Lorna Florence Fairweather (one of 22 nurses who survived the sinking of the Vyner Brooke and were washed ashore on Radji Beach, Banka Island, where they surrendered to the Japanese, along with 25 British soldiers. On 16 February 1942 the group was massacred, the soldiers were bayoneted and the nurses were ordered to march into the sea where they were shot); SFX13548 Lt Carrie Jean (Jean) Ashton (taken POW following the sinking of the Vyner Brooke); VX61226 Sr Bessie Christina Ellen Muldoon; VFX61330 Sr Vivian Bullwinkel (survived the massacre on Radji Beach, then taken POW by the Japanese, she survived and was able to give evidence in the war crimes trials); SFX10504 Matron Irene Melville Drummond (massacred on Radji Beach); SX13420 Sr Maude Lyall Spehr; V9259 Sr Bessie Christina Taylor (no further information); NX76276 Sr Marie Evelyn Hurley; NX76275 Sr Mary Eleanor McGlade; SX13418 Lt Florence Rebecca Casson (massacred on Radji Beach); NX76282 Lt Veronica Ann Clancy; TX6020 Sr Harley Rosalind Brewer; NX76279 Sr Janet Kerr (murdered on Radji Beach).
