Harlow Hill Cemetery, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. Grave of Simpson family. The inscription says: "In memory of Robert Woodliffe, dearly beloved husband of Mary E. Simpson, who departed this life on December 30th 1917 aged 65 years. Also of Preston, youngest son of the above, who was killed in action at Rouex (meaning Rouen?), France, on May 12th 1917, aged 24. Also of the above Mary Simpson who departed this life December 27th 1945, her 85th birthday. Blessed are the dead (illegible). Dora Simpson died 2nd July 1969 aged 85 years." The above fallen soldier is "Sergeant Preston Simpson 28304, 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, son of Robert Woodliffe Simpson and Mary E. Simpson of Wellfield House, Foggy Furze, West Hartlepool. Killed 12 May 1917 aged 24. Born West Hartlepool, enlisted Darlington, resided 54 Church Street, West Hartlepool." (Yorkshire Regiment War Graves: The Arras Memorial) |
