Summary

Description
English: Detail of Heinrich Heine's grave at Montmartre Cemetery in Paris. The grave was designed by Dutch architect Louis Hasselriis in - as it says on the back of the grave in Roman numerals - MDCCCIC, which seems to be an incorrect (albeit shorter) rendition of the year 1899. Engraved on the three sides of the tombstone is Heine's poem Wo? (Where?). It says in English translation:

Where?

Where shall I, the wander-wearied,

Find my haven and my shrine?

Under palms will I be buried?

Under lindens on the Rhine?

Shall I lie in desert reaches,

Buried by a stranger's hand ?

Or upon the well-loved beaches,

Covered by the friendly sand?

Well, what matter ! God has given

Wider spaces there than here.

And the stars that swing in heaven

Shall be lamps above my bier.

Wo?

Wo wird einst des Wandermüden

Letzte Ruhestätte sein?

Unter Palmen in dem Süden?

Unter Linden an dem Rhein?

Werd ich wo in einer Wüste

Eingescharrt von fremder Hand?

Oder ruh ich an der Küste

Eines Meeres in dem Sand?

Immerhin! Mich wird umgeben

Gotteshimmel, dort wie hier,

Und als Totenlampen schweben

Nachts die Sterne über mir.
