Description

Cover: Vitruvian Man / Open Door Clinic, by Walt Crowley. Page 5 article discusses migrant labor in Yakima Valley.

This is actually page 14 of the issue, because pages 8-9 are a single spread.

The elaborate graphic on the lower portion of the page is uncredited. It is an advertisement for an event occurring at 707 First Avenue in the Pioneer Square neighborhood of Seattle, a building built shortly after the Great Seattle Fire that was nearing the end of its existence; that and several nearby buildings were replaced by the multi-story parking structure that now (2024) occupies the west side of First Avenue between Cherry and Columbia Streets. From the ad: "Take a Trip with the Travel Agency The Joint Assembly 707 1st Ave Fri.-Sat. 9-2a.m. 21 and over." From 1892 to 1903 this building, the Union Building, had housed the Toklas, Singerman and Company department store (with several name changes and moves, this evolved into MacDougall and Southwick, which lasted until 1964). Ferdinand Toklas (1845-1924) of Toklas, Singerman and Co. was the father of Alice B. Toklas, lover of Gertrude Stein, perhaps best known in the late 1960s for having published a cookbook with a recipe for hashish brownies. No idea whether the organizers of this event would have been aware of the connection.
