Summary

Description
English: The Hermits Cave (The Hermitage) in Hermits Wood next to the village of Dale Abbey In Derbyshire.

The wood contains the Hermitage which was made around 1130 AD by a Derby Baker, likened to the Roman centurion Cornelius who in Acts of the Apostles had a vision leading him to God after a life of prayer and giving to the poor. The Baker too had a vision and set out from Derby to find Deepdale, as the area was formerly known. Cf the first part of St John Hope, W. H. (1883). "Chronicle of the Abbey of St Mary de Parco Stanley, or Dale, Derbyshire". Journal of the Derbyshire Archaeological and Natural History Society 5: 1–30. Bemrose and Sons. Retrieved on 3 July 2019.

He dug the cave into the hillside and lived there for about 20 years

The Hermitage has 2 parts; probable a chapel and the other the Hermits living area.
