Summary

Description
English: Aerial view of the part of Fairbanks, Alaska north of the Cushman Street Bridge, with a small part of downtown Fairbanks seen along the bottom edge. Towards the bottom is Garden Island, originally a separate community, and the Catholic Tract, home to Immaculate Conception Church and St. Joseph's Hospital. At middle left is the complex of the Fairbanks Exploration Company, which forms the core of the current Illinois Street Historic District. At middle right is the former Charles Slater farm, which became the Slaterville neighborhood. At top is the former Bentley Dairy and the beginnings of Bobby's Miller's junkyard, which occupied the dairy property until the construction of the Bentley Mall in 1976/7. The road through the dairy property (the eastern end of College Road today) and Illinois Street leading to the bridge formed the southern end of the Steese Highway during its first quarter-century of existence. At the time of this photo, this was soon to change as the Wendell Street Bridge was under construction and the Steese's southern terminus was rerouted; it would again be rerouted in 1976 with the construction of the Steese Expressway and another bridge across the Chena River.
