Summary

Description

English: Information board about the circles of granite sett paving, showcasing different types of granite and various sizes of setts. Most of the stones are from quarries in Lysekil Municipality, and they have been shaped local stone masons. The paving is a tribute to the Lysekil stone industry. The circles cover a large yard next to Kungstorget in Lysekil, Sweden.

Transcript of the info board:

"Lysekil - a stone industry municipality. Do you see the picture on the ground in front of you? The stone setting shows the different types of granite that exist, and how they differ from each other depending on the quarry they come from.

During the 19th century, the stone industry developed to become one of Lysekil municipality's most important businesses. At the time, there were stone quarries in Lysekil, Hjälmedal, Spjösvik/Norra Grundsund and Härnäset. The quarries in lower Lyse started in 1875, and during the latter part of the 19th century, quarries were also started at Stångehuvud and Lahälla, among others. In Lahälla, the old sett factory has been converted into a museum.

In the 19th century, there were 155 quarries listed within the municipality, of which 60 were in Brastad, 48 in Bro and 47 in Lyse/Lysekil. Hjälmedal was then one of the larger workplaces within the municipality. The quarries in Hjälmedal were in use from the 1860s until 1905, when the operation was moved to Rixö.

Around the square are some large square granite blocks. The blocks were commissioned by Nazi Germany during World War II. They were never delivered and can be found as seats along walking paths in the municipality."
