Description
English: At a memorial atop Mount Suribachi, military members pin their rank insignias on a board in homage to the Marines and Navy corpsmen killed on the island of Iwo Jima during World War II. More Marines were awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions at Iwo Jima than in any other battle in U.S. history. In 36 days of fighting, there were 25,851 U.S. casualties – 6,825 killed. Virtually all 22,000 Japanese perished. The board can be found behind the American memorial.
