30 May 2012 - Presiding Officer sends jubilee scroll to mark the Queen’s 60th year on throne

The National Assembly for Wales’s Presiding Officer, Rosemary Butler AM, has sent the Queen a gift on behalf of the National Assembly, to mark her Diamond Jubilee. On 5 June, Queen Elizabeth II will celebrate 60 years on the throne, which will be marked by events and parties across Wales. To mark the occasion, the Presiding Officer is sending her a commemorative scroll in both English and Welsh. .

“It is fitting that the people of Wales recognise the enormous amount of work that the Queen has done for Wales in her 60 years on the throne,” said Mrs Butler. "I know that communities across Wales are doing various things to mark this milestone for our monarch. I believe it is right, that on behalf of everyone in Wales, the National Assembly for Wales marks this Jubilee."

The scroll was designed and created by renowned Carmarthen-based calligrapher and stone mason Ieuan Rees. Ieuan graduated from the Royal College of Art with a Master of Design Degree in 1967 and has worked as a freelance artist/craftsman for over 40 years. He is regarded as one of Britain’s most versatile artist/craftsmen in the fields of lettering, letter carving, calligraphy, architectural lettering and graphic communication.

“It was an honour to be asked by the Presiding Officer of the National Assembly for Wales to design a commemorative scroll on the legislature’s behalf to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee,” said Mr Rees. “The design, while intentionally simple and dignified, has been crafted to highlight the sincerity of the message from Rosemary Butler on behalf of the Assembly to Her Majesty on this remarkable achievement.”

The scroll will be accompanied by a letter from the Presiding Officer congratulating the Queen on her Diamond Jubilee.

Y Llywydd yn anfon sgrôl y Jiwbilî i nodi 60fed flwyddyn y Frenhines ar yr orsedd

Mae Rosemary Butler AC, Llywydd Cynulliad Cenedlaethol Cymru, wedi anfon anrheg at y Frenhines ar ran y Cynulliad Cenedlaethol i nodi ei Jiwbilî Ddiemwnt. Ar 5 Mehefin 2012, bydd Brenhines Elisabeth II yn dathlu 60 mlynedd ar yr orsedd a bydd hyn yn cael ei nodi gan ddigwyddiadau a phartïon ledled Cymru. I nodi’r achlysur, mae’r Llywydd yn anfon sgrôl goffa yn Gymraeg ac yn Saesneg, a bydd copi ohoni yn cael ei arddangos yn y Senedd tan 15 Mehefin.

Dywedodd Mrs Butler, “Mae’n briodol bod pobl Cymru yn cydnabod y gwaith sylweddol y mae’r Frenhines wedi ei wneud dros Gymru dros y 60 mlynedd y mae wedi bod ar yr orsedd. Gwn fod cymunedau ledled Cymru yn gwneud gwahanol bethau i nodi’r garreg filltir hon. Credaf ei bod yn briodol i Gynulliad Cenedlaethol Cymru nodi’r Jiwbilî ar ran holl bobl Cymru.”

Dyluniwyd a chrëwyd y sgrôl gan Ieuan Rees, y caligraffydd clodfawr o Sir Gaerfyrddin. Graddiodd Ieuan o’r Coleg Celf Brenhinol gyda Gradd Meistr mewn Cynllunio ym 1967 ac mae wedi gweithio fel artist/crefftwr ar ei liwt ei hun ers dros 40 o flynyddoedd. Fe’i ystyrir yn un o artistiaid/crefftwyr mwyaf amryddawn Prydain ym meysydd llythrennu, cerfio llythrennau, caligraffi, llythrennu pensaernïol a chyfathrebu graffig.

Dywedodd Mr Rees: “Roedd hi’n anrhydedd bod Llywydd Cynulliad Cenedlaethol Cymru wedi gofyn i mi ddylunio sgrôl goffa ar ran y ddeddfwrfa i nodi Jiwbilî Ddeimwnt Ei Mawrhydi Y Frenhines. Mae’r cynllun, er yn fwriadol yn syml ac urddasol, wedi’i grefftio i nodi diffuantrwydd neges Rosemary ar ran y Cynulliad i’w Mawrhydi am y cyflawniad hynod hwn.”

Bydd y Llywydd yn anfon llythyr gyda’r sgrôl yn llongyfarch y Frenhines ar ei Jiwbilî Ddiemwnt.
