Description
Deutsch: Carl August Böttiger(1760-1835) Schulmann und Alterstumforscher Stich nach dem Gemälde von F. A. Tischbein. Böttinger, zuerst durch sein grosses Wissen nicht nur Goethe und Schiller nützlich, sondern besonders Wieland wertvoll als eigentlicher Herausgeber des "Teutschen Merkur" (seit 1796), machte sich bald mißliebig durch seine üble Betriebsamkeit und Klatschsucht. Nach Böttingers unberechtigter Verfügung über das Manuskript von "Wallensteins Lager" rückte Goethe von ihm ab und brach mit ihm nach Böttigers Kritik der Aufführung von Schlegels "Ion". Böttinger ging 1804 nach Dresden. In Goethes Nachlaß fand sich neben anderen Invektiven eine "K... und B..." überschriebene, die beginnt: "Die gründlichsten Schuften, die Gott erschuf, ..." Mit K. ist August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue (1761-1819) gemeint.
