l, I thought tomyself, as I hurried along the path,even though I do get a drenching. But the owls glared at me uncom-prehendingly. The one, who had fore-told the shower, had his head perkedon one side in a very saucy way asthough he was thoroughly enjoying thediscomfiture of those who didnt takeadvantage of his weather prophecy. Itried, in vain to talk to him butcouldnt make myself understood.Though he and his mates were mutter-ing, not a sound was intelligible to myears and I was forced to admit thatthe magic of the day was over-I nolonger understood bird lore. Perhapsthe rain dispelled it; perhaps it requiredthe presence of a bird sister. That is aproblem I have yet to solve.
