n the long grass, and tolook for him would have been madness. One of ourmission men, however, ultimately shot a large speci-men, as he was trying to gorge a fowl which he hadseized. There are several small steamers at Stanley Pool,including the American Baptist Mission Steamer, the Henry Reed.^^ On this pretty little craft we madea voyage to our Equator Station, about four hundredand fifty miles. It gave us an oportunity of seeingmore of the beauties of the Pool, and also somethingof the natives who live along the rivers banks.On board we had Mr. B., the engineer; Mr. W.,of the English Baptist Mission; and Capt. Masari,an Italian explorer, who was going up the MobangaEiver. We had also twelve natives and Loangos; sixZanzibaris and six boys. These were employed aswoodchoppers, firemen, cook, washerman, throwingthe lead, and other duties. Our steamer was heavilvladen.
