Summary[edit]

File information
Description

A 19th century illustration of a tombstone, found on the island of Iona, of what is thought to be a MacLeod. The source's footnote of the stone reads: "This is the largest tomb-stone in Iona, and lies in the centre of the Chancel of the Cathedral. It is cracked across in two places. The stone is massive and very hard. The figure (a MacLeod of Macleod) is sunk into the stone, and was evidently filled up (tradition says) with silver, rather handy for tourists' canes to enable them to walk off in sacrilege".

Source

Iona, by James Frederick S. Gordon, published in 1885 by D. Bryce & son, plate 1, figure 9.

Date

Unknown, in or before 1885 (the year that the book was published).
