Description
English: Macropetalichthys rapheidolabis Norwood & Owen, 1846 - fossil fish in limestone in the Devonian of Ohio, USA.

This fossil fish is a type of placoderm, a group of extinct, mostly predatory fish that existed during the Middle Paleozoic (Silurian and Devonian).

The black material on this specimen is actual bone - most of the bone has been removed by tourists touching the fossil during cave tours. The rest of the specimen is an internal mold.

Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Vertebrata, Placodermi, Petalichthyida, Macropetalichthyidae

Stratigraphy: Columbus Limestone, Middle Devonian

Locality: trailside, Level 2 of Seneca Caverns, just south of Flat Rock Quarry & south-southwest of the town of Bellevue, northern Ohio, USA
