Summary

Description
English: Plan of the palace areas of Madinat al-Zahra. Labels added for major structures and locations that have been excavated and documented. This plan is an approximate and simplified reproduction of more detailed plans published by archeologists and scholars (see sources below). It is intended as a simple visual reference to help readers understand the layout of the site discussed in the text of Wikipedia articles: it is not a substitute for professional or academically-produced maps.

Sources for the map:

  • Map of the city on page 64 or 65 in: Arnold, Felix (2017). "Islamic Palace Architecture in the Western Mediterranean: A History". Oxford University Press. Also used some of the building-specific plans after this to help with some building-specific details.
  • Map of the city on page 28 in: Triano, Antonio Vallejo (1992). "Madīnat al-Zahrā': The Triumph of the Islamic State". In Dodds, Jerrilynn D. (ed.). "Al-Andalus: The Art of Islamic Spain". New York: The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Also looked at the plan for the House of Ja'far.
  • For some of the overall city outline, the map on page 7 in: Triano, Antonio Vallejo (2007). "Madinat Al-Zahra; Transformation of a Caliphal City", in Glaire D. Anderson, Mariam Rosser-Owen, (eds.) "Revisiting al-Andalus: perspectives on the material culture of Islamic Iberia and beyond". Brill.
  • Looked at Google Earth satellite imagery to clarify some details that were hard to read on the plans.

Additional source for the labels:

  • Barrucand, Marianne; Bednorz, Achim (1992). "Moorish architecture in Andalusia". Taschen. See page 64 and nearby text.
