Summary

Description
English: Map showing location of Montmorency-Beaufort in the Champagne region of France, 100 miles east of Paris & 25 miles north-east of Troyes. The manor and castle of Beaufort (which after 1688 added the prefix Montmorency after its then owner) was the birthplace of John Beaufort, 1st Earl of Somerset (1371-1410), eldest illegitimate son of John of Gaunt (1340-1399) (third surviving son of King Edward III) by his mistress (later wife) Katherine Swynford. He was the founder of the House of Beaufort, subsequently legitimised. The Portcullis heraldic badge of the Beauforts, now the emblem of the House of Commons, is believed to have been based on that of the castle of Beaufort, now demolished.
