Ce tableau est une reprise autographe et partielle de « Madame Labille-Guiard exécutant le portrait du peintre Vien, sénateur et comte de l’Empire », chef-d'oeuvre de Marie-Gabrielle Capet, recentrée sur la partie gauche seule. Exposé au Salon de 1808, il est conservé aujourd'hui à la Neue Pinakothek à Munich.

Marie-Gabrielle Capet représente sa professeure, Adélaïde Labille-Guiard, en train de réaliser le portrait du peintre Joseph-Marie Vien (hors du tableau) à sa droite, alors considéré comme le patriarche du néoclassicisme. Derrière elle, se tient le mari de cette dernière, François-André Vincent. Marie-Gabrielle Capet se représente en autoportrait, les yeux plongés dans ceux du spectateur, accoudée à une table, au pied de laquelle est posé un carton à dessins. Elle prépare les couleurs de la palette, symbole du lien d’amitié qui unit ces deux femmes dans l’atelier. Par rapport au tableau de Munich, on observe des variantes dans l'arrière-plan. L'atmosphère de l'atelier mondain cède la place à une scène intime.
