Summary
| Description |
English: Depiction of the Rule of Marteloio (Medieval traverse problem) on a portolan chart. Intended course of ship from Corsica to Genoa is line AB (violet, bearing = N). But actual course of the ship has been 70 miles on line AC (blue, bearing = NW). Proposed return to intended course is line CD (blue, bearing NE). Calculating the distance needed to sail on the return course (ritorno) to recover and the implied avanzo (distance made good on the intended course) is a trigonometric problem, i.e. mathematically solving the triangle ACD, with two angles and one side given.
