| Description |
English: Mary D. Diehl was one of the first two women hired by the City of Philadelphia to serve as a member of the city's police force. Having previously worked as an agent for the Travelers' Aid Society, she was hired by Philadelphia, along with Miss L. M. Gillespie, to patrol the city's two main railroad terminals. Authorized to carry guns, handcuffs, and badges, the two women were empowered to detain and arrest criminal suspects throughout the city. Prior to their recruitment, women had only been allowed to serve as police officers inside of the city's department stores. |
