Summary

Description
English: This pen and ink sketch of Mary (Keene) Evans, wife of Charles Evans, the founder of the Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading, Pennsylvania, was published by "The Reading Eagle" newspaper in Pennsylvania in an 1886 article about Mary and her husband. The newspaper described its illustrations of the couple as follows: "His portrait that adorns the head of this column is from the original silhouette now in the possession of friends of this city. The original of the picture of Mrs. Evans is also to be found in the same place." Born in Philadelphia in 1769, Mary (Keene) Evans was a daughter of Philadelphia alderman Reynold Keene (1738-1800) and Christiana (Stille) Keene (1744-1777). She married Charles Evans in 1794, and widowed him in 1738. Initially buried at the Episcopal Church graveyard in Reading, Mary's remains were exhumed and reinterred at the Charles Evans Cemetery following her husband's death in 1847.
