Sullys portrait of the Queen, the upper part of which is reproduced here in the largepicture and the full-length in the smaller, has an especially interesting- history. Thishistory is related in the records of the Society of the Sons of St. George, Philadelphia,as follows : In the year 1837, soon after the accession of Her Majesty Queen Victoriato the throne of Great Britain, the Society determined to memorialize Her Majesty tosit for her portrait to Mr. Thomas Sully, the artist, who departed for England in Octo-ber of that year, carrying with him the memorial, which declared that the Societywished to place it in a conspicuous situation as themeans, atthe meetings ofour Society\of cherishing the recollections of the country from tvhence we sp? ung?
