English: In December 1978 I visited The People's Republic of China. I was the first Westerner some of the local Manchurians in Changchun had ever seen in person. All foot and bicycle traffic came to an immediate halt in this scene. This happened wherever I went, especially in Jilin Province, which is near the North Korean border. I was with an American "study group" but I feigned sick one day while the others left to visit the hydroelectric plant in Jilin. Despite the consternation on the part of the guards, I was able to leave the police compound and walk around on my own. People initially ran away in terror upon seeing a "foreign devil," but gradually came back to fill the street and stare.
