Summary

Description
English: Sculpture by Antonio Sciortino inside MUŻA at Auberge d'Italie, Valletta, Malta

"Plaster model of Monument of the Lighthouse. On the back of the photograph Sciortino wrote: 'plaster. The original model for a lighthouse scale 1 for 100 I front side'. Lighthouse International was the organization founded by Winifred Holt (1870-1945) who was also a sculptress, and of whom the Maltese sculptor had made a fine marble portrait [28] . This monument was meant for an American competition. As noted by Vella (2000: 105), it is a neoclassical "imposing work of monumental architecture" to be put almost on a par with the Temple of the British Empire. The photograph is of the monument's front side. Indeed, the model presents a very elegant composition which repeats the vertical motif of the columns in the lower part, and in the small and large pilasters which form part of the middle section, and a huge obelisk, which contains on its front other pilasters, at the top. In the lower part there is a figure with outstretched arms, inviting visitors. The sphere surmounting the obelisk is a neoclassical symbol of perfection which reminds one of the Cenotaph of Newton by Boullee. On the same level but on different structures one finds sculptural groups. Helene Buhagiar (1947: 29) dates it to 1928. There is a scale model at NMFA Inv. 5765"
