Summary

Description Arms of Montagu of Boughton, Northamptonshire: Argent, three fusils conjoined in fess gules a bordure sable. This family, which includes the Barons Montagu of Boughton, the Dukes of Montagu, the Earls of Manchester and the Earls of Sandwich, is descended from Sir Edward Montagu (1485-1557), Chief Justice of the King's Bench, who first acquired the manor of Boughton. A certain descent from the ancient Montagu-Monthermer line of the Montagu Earls of Salisbury has not been proven. The earliest certain member of the family of Montagu of Boughton is Thomas Montagu (d.1516) of Hemington, Northamptonshire, the father of Sir Edward Montagu (1485-1557). The father of Thomas Montagu (d.1516) of Hemington is said to have been a certain "Richard Ladde", a yeoman resident at Hanging Houghton, Lamport, Northamptonshire, who appears to have changed his surname to Montagu, for reasons unknown. Collins Peerage suggests that the family may have descended from a certain James Montagu of Ludsdowne in Kent, supposedly an illegitimate son of Thomas Montagu, 4th Earl of Salisbury (1388-1428). Such illegitimacy might explain the bordure sable which differences the arms of the Montagu Earls of Salisbury. The version promoted by the family itself, as displayed on the heraldic mantelpiece in Boughton House, erected by Ralph Montagu, 1st Duke of Montagu (1638-1709) is that Montagu of Boughton descends from a certain Simon de Montacute (1353-1389) a younger brother of John Montagu, 3rd Earl of Salisbury. Supposedly descended from him in the 5th generation is Thomas Montagu (d.1516) of Hemington, the father of the Lord Chief Justice.
