Summary

Description
English: Morthouse in the kirkyard of St Mary of the Storms, Cowie Morthouses were immensely strong buildings designed to store corpses until they were too corrupt to be of interest to grave robbers (a.k.a. resurrection men or Burkers) who stole bodies for sale to local Anatomy schools. This one situated North of Cowie and overlooking Stonehaven Bay was built around 1820. It is built against the West wall of the old chapel of St Mary of the Storms. The building is partly underground and was originally reached by a flight of steps, now filled in for safety.
