Summary

Description
English: This is a copy of a photograph of Pango Ngākaari Tukia of Rānana, Whanganui River, taken by the studio of William James Harding in Whanganui sometime around 1868. It is labeled as "Mrs. Trafford" and she was popularly known then as "the widow" of Major Benjamin Trafford of the 65th Regiment. However, she was abandoned by Trafford in 1863 when he returned to England and married again before he died in 1891. There are no records of them having ever married. According to Pukehika family descendants, she was formally married at Rānana on 1 March 1868 by the Reverend Basil Taylor to the Māori leader Hōri "George" Pukehika, a former warrior and widely admired woodcarver. The photograph is archived in the William James Harding Collection, Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, New Zealand.
