Neolithic: Sherd of Peterborough Ware
Description
English: A ceramic rim sherd of Neolithic date made from a soft black fabric which contains a large flint grit. The rim is slightly out-turned and measures 33.83mm long with a thickness of 6.4mm. The diameter of the vessel appears to have been in the order of c120mm. External decoration comprises an upper band of hoof-shaped impressions (3-4 are visible) perhaps made using the tip of a bone and a lower band of diagonal whipped cord impressions (2 are visible). The sherd belongs to the Peterborough Ware tradition, c3500-2500BC.
