| Description |
English: NSWR H Young Class DP (ex-Class PH) power van/locomotive No.104 in silver livery at Trainworks, the New South Wales Railway Museum, Thirlmere 31 March 2016. NSWR Eveleigh built 5 Class PH power van in 1937 each with four Harland & Wolf 330 hp 8-cyl 'Harlandic' diesel engines and Voith hydraulic transmission. These engines were replaced in 1953 with four 250 hp GM 6-110 diesels coupled in pairs, when the power vans were reclassified DP locomotives. The Class PH's would haul up to 3 trailers, 12 of which were built by Richies Bros (Auburn). They were specifically designed to form the 'Silver City Comet' Parkes - Broken Hill service, which was the first air conditioned train in the British Empire. The sets were also used on the Parkes - Orange - Dubbo service and the Sydney - Canberra - Newcastle 'Federal City Express'. They were withdrawn in 1989. |
