English: This open cluster was discovered by the Sicilian astronomer Giovanni Battista Hodierna in 1654 to be rediscovered by the British William Herschel in 1783.
The Big Dog Tau cluster owes its common name to the star τ (Tau - magnitude : 4,4) which illuminates its center. It is also found under the name "Northern Jewel Box" in reference to NGC 4755 located in the constellation of the Southern Cross.
Ab: Cet amas ouvert a été découvert par l'astronome sicilien Giovanni Battista Hodierna en 1654 pour être redécouvert par le britannique William Herschel en 1783.
L'amas de Tau du Grand Chien doit son nom commun à l'étoile τ (Tau - magnitude : 4,4) qui illumine son centre. On le retrouve également sous l'appellation « Northern Jewel Box » (Boite à bijoux boréale) en référence à NGC 4755 situé dans la constellation de la Croix du SudCroix du Sud. |
