Summary

Description
English: The Northland Workforce Training Center, 683 Northland Avenue, Buffalo, New York, September 2019. This four-story manufacturing center is a prime example of the versatility of the work of Green & Wicks, Buffalo's preeminent architectural firm of the era: though best known for ornate Neoclassical designs such as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the gold-domed Buffalo Savings Bank building, here they work competently in almost a polar opposite aesthetic, namely the austere, functional Daylight Factory model that was all the rage in industrial architecture at the time of its construction (1910). The steel-reinforced concrete framing that defines the style is plainly visible on the side elevation at right, while what little ornamentation the building sports - decorative brickwork in the narrow spandrel panels between the characteristic large floor-to-ceiling windows; metal cornice with geometric decorative ornaments - come into play on the façade seen at left. The building was originally home to the Niagara Machine and Tool Works, which had been founded in 1879 and continued to manufacture its namesake products there - mainly those used in metalworking - under its original and subsequent names until going bankrupt in 1999. In 2018, the by then long-vacant building became home to the Northland Workforce Training Center, a public-private partnership offering industry-driven education, training and workforce development in a wide variety of skilled high-tech manufacturing fields. The same year, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
